Okay everyone! I just wanna organize something new from the usual meetups for dinner outings.
Anybody tried Prawn Fishing before? It's quite fun although a little expensive (abt $30 for 3 hrs in most places) . If cost is a problem, we can always share rods just for the experience. Meanwhile, the rest can mingle around to talk about isopods (HelloKitty Admin note: mention this on that day and u will get (–) X 44999) and gossip and maybe BBQ.

I just went last night to the Farmart prawn pond. 5 of us share 2 rods, prawn for near 3 hours only 2 prawns. Remember to bring lots of titbits and drinks - that is the fun part, pinic-ing! :-)

Since you guys are planning on the trip, lemme share with you some of my tips and tricks - hopefully increasing more CatchRate (CR) for all y'all!
Firstly Equipments! Please prepare your BBQ neccessities like Charcoal, Sataysticks, Paper Plates and drinks prior to the trip! Also remember those seasonings and that cannot-leave-without special chilli that each of you have!
Important things to note before throwing in the bait&hook...
#1 Prawns are mostly bottom feeders. So, make sure your bait can reach the pondbed! - As every pond varies in depth, it is VERY important to set the length of your bait-float equal to the depth of pond, allow an excess of 10cm due to the minor water current. This can be done by dipping your rod straight down into the pond till you touched the pondbed OR you could use a sinker to tie it to your line for measurement then adjust your FLOAT using the measurements.
#2 Preparing and Hooking that bait. - I've tried chicken liver, cockles, guppies, baby catfish. But the most effective I've noticed is actually chicken heart. It is non-messy, easy to slice and stays firm on the hook. Remember to slice them into sashimi-thin and tiny like a ricegrain. The key is to only coat the tip of the hook with that small piece of meat, hiding the hook or just leaving a LITTLE of the hook tip exposed for the prawn to bite.
#3 Waiting for a bite.. - Be patient, if you are chio or handsome enough, the prawns will surely bite. =D - Keep your eyes on the float, it should point upright. (If not, please reread #1) - Occationally move your bait VERY slowly to attract the prawns.
- When your float moves abnormally/starts to sink, this is the indication that a prawn has engaged your bait. DON'T PANIC. Allow 5-7sec for the prawn to grab the bait with its pincer and shove into its mouth. While it is busy doing this, you position the tip of your rod ON TOP of the FLOAT. Slowlllly tighten the line between the rod and float.
- When the 5-7sec is up, make a quick jerk using WRIST ROTATION. (Imagine motobikers going vroomvroom) Your rod should be pulled skywards up to ensure that the hook is properly secured into the prawn's mouth. - Continue the wrist rotation to LIFT the prawn out of the water. this will cause the prawn rod to bend unbeliveably but don't worry, flaunt it and haolian to your neighbours that you got one.
Pull the prawn up and do it slowly, don't panic - the 1st jerk has already secured it.
#4 After fragging it.. - Land the prawn. Take care don't let the giap giap hurt you. Most people would snap their pincers on the spot using bear hands or a plier. Please note to hold the prawn by its body, using thumb and index to secure it firmly by the head before removing the hook out of its mouth.
If you follow all these, I believe that your overall CR would improve. Remember, it's not about the amount of prawns, but the amount of fun! =D
My CR is currently 10-15/hr. There are pros who could do even high, so this is just my thirtycents worth of contribution. =D
